Daan Thoomes werd in 1949geboren te Veenendaal. Hij bezocht het Christelijk Lyceum teVeenendaal en de Rijkskweekschool te Arnhem. Daarna studeerde hijwijsgerige
en historische pedagogiek in Utrecht. In 1975 werd hijaangesteld tot wetenschappelijk staflid voor de vakgebiedenpedagogiek en psychologie aan de Universiteitsbibliotheek
Utrecht enin 1991 werd hij benoemd tot hoofd van de afdeling vakreferenten.Vervolgens vervulde hij tot 2005 diverse andere leidinggevendefuncties aan de
UB.
Van 1978 tot 1982 verzorgde hij tevensde redactie van pedagogische en onderwijskundige artikelen in deGrote Winkler Prins Encyclopedie, achtste druk.
Daarnaast
was hij van 1976 tot 2003werkzaam als avonddocent bij de Opleiding Pedagogiek-MO aan deNutsacademie en de Hogeschool Rotterdam.
In 1989 promoveerde hij in Groningen opeen proefschrift over de pedagogiekcolleges van FriedrichSchleiermacher uit 1826 (promotoren: Prof. Dr. Jan Dirk Imelman
enProf. Dr. Dr. h.c. Heinz Kimmerle).

Een jaar later publiceerde hij eenbundel theologisch-pedagogische opstellen over Luther, Lessing enSchleiermacher. Ter gelegenheid van het Pestalozzi-herdenkingsjaar1996
verzorgde hij in samenwerking met de ZwitsersePestalozzi-kenner, Dr. Arthur Brühlmeier, een Nederlandstaligeuitgave van de Neuhof-geschriften.
Behalve in pedagogische tijdschriftenpubliceerde hij regelmatig over godsdienstpedagogische onderwerpen in theologische tijdschriften als In de Waagschaal,
CentraalWeekblad, Narthex, Luther Bulletin, en
TheologischDebat

In 1975 a ‘terminal’ was set up in the Utrecht University Library: a large blue machine with a modem and telephone. By means of a complicated wire connection
it was possible to make contact with America, where the actual computer was located. The terminal enabled the consultation of major international subject
bibliographies such as Chemical Abstracts, Biological Abstracts or Psychological Abstracts. To make use of this – at the time ultramodern – service,
academic staff could fill in a special application form at their faculty and then make an appointment with a staff member of the University Library
who would carry out the ‘search’. If the connection was successful, files were searched using keywords from a thesaurus in an interactive process.
The brochure Looking for Sources with the Computer reads: ‘it is as if one is in dialogue with the computer’. The end product, a list of relevant titles
and abstracts, was printed in America and usually reached Utrecht through the post after about ten days.
The room with the blue terminal
radiated a spirit of innovation. The most well-known ‘host institutions’ at that time were Lockheed in California and Dimdi in Germany. In Utrecht
AGOL, Afdeling Geautomatiseerde Ontsluiting van Literatuur or Department for Automated Access to Literature was set up to provide this service. Recent
developments in the computerisation of catalogues mean that users now have ample opportunity for searching through catalogues in various ways and achieving
better results more quickly. ……..
